Burley Cricket Club 1st XI v Fawley III on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
The 1st XI continued their unbeaten Division1 West campaign with a convincing 10 wicket victory over Fawley.
Following the damp overnight conditions, Kieron Hudson won the toss and elected to field first. Fawley madeit clear they were not willing to start if there was the slightest amount of rain in the air, but the few falling drops abaited and with all the Burley fielders already waiting in the middle, play got underway on time.
Jim Burry got the early breakthrough, having Steve Cox caught at slip by Hudson, without troubling the scorers. John Painter and Liam Smith kept the scoreboard ticking at 3 an over until Painter mis-timed a drive to Wayne Tucker off of James Edworthy. Tony North became the linchpin of the Fawley innings, his 49 was supported by Smith 27. But their runs didn't come quickly and the total relied on some quick runs from the hitting of Roly Coutts who hit 32* at the tail end of the innings. Again Burley missed a few chances in the field and this coupled with airborne balls falling into gaps between fielders only 7 wickets fell meaning, although the total was well within reach the chance to get maximum bowling points was missed. Burley picking up 3 of the 5 points available. James Edworthy bowled economically, taking 2-17 from his 10 overs and Jonathan Beck was the leading wicket taker with 3-49.
In reply, after tea, Kieron Hudson and Jonathan Beck found the going much easier than the Fawley batting line-up and eased to 50 without loss off of 12 overs. Although both batsmen survived dropped catches neither could be removed from the crease and the total was easily within reach, Hudson hitting the winning runs at the end of the 31st over. Both had passed their half century and are proving to be one of the leading opening pairs in the division.
A 10 wicket victory meant 22 points from the game and consolidated the clubs 2nd place in the league table. Next week the club travel to Totton & Eling.
