Burley Cricket Club

Totton & Eling III v Burley Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 29 Jun 2013 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 120 runs

Match report Despite a poor batting performance Burley managed to find another convincing victory to remain 2nd in Division 1 West.
Put into bat, openers Kieron Hudson and Jonathan Beck made good headway against the Totton and Eling attack and again took the opening stand passed 50 (the 6th time this season). With the score at 60 Beck (40) edged behind with Rich Dibben juggling but holding onto the catch. Soon after Hudson (23) also fell, not connecting with a leg stump full toss which went straight to mid wicket. Despite James Edworthy, like Beck and Hudson, falling to the bowling of Brett Merritt for 9 Burley were well placed at 90-3. Steve Doick made 18 before being bowled around his legs by Ollie Merritt. Then came a stand of 36 between Wayne Tucker (25) and Rob Munro (18) which took the score to 144 before a collapse saw the remaining Burley wickets fall for just 10 runs in just 2.4 overs. Ben Pinkey picking up 4-24.
After tea Burley knew they had to keep things tight and field well and knew that early wickets would not only be a necessity but would pile the pressure onto what was thought to be a fragile Totton batting line-up. So it proved! Jim Burry started the fall of wickets, bowling South African Nel with his first ball. James Edworthy bowled 4 maidens (including a wicket) in his first 4 overs and after 7 overs the score stood at 7-2. Batsmen continued to come and go. Edworthy bowled 8 overs 2-11 (that included 8 runs from his final over!), with Jim Burry providing the outstanding performance, taking 6-18 from his 10 over spell. It was left to Craig Doick to finish the innings taking 2-2 in 2.3 overs and the Totton and Eling innings had faltered and stumbled to a lowly 34 all out.
Next Saturday sees Burley play host to local rivals Ringwood, who, despite scoring 242 suffered defeat at the hands of Godshill who crept home by 1 wicket. Around the rest of the league, leaders Mottisfont beat Alderholt and Whiteparish kept the pressure on Burley by easily beating Shrewton by 8 wickets chasing just 99. There were also wins for Brockenhurst, Hyde, Mudeford, and Parley.
The top three of Mottisfont, Burley and Whiteparish are now a little distance ahead of the chasing pack with Pylewell and Mudeford sitting at the foot of the table a couple of points, on average, behind 3rd bottom Sway.
