Burley Cricket Club 1st XI v Lymington III on Sat 13 Jul 2013 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
A lacklustre performance meant Burley slipped to their first defeat of the season. Complacency in the field, some poor bowling, dropped catches and little in the way of acceleration in the batting all conspired to send Burley away with only 9 points from the game and a fall to 3rd in the Division 1 West table. Whiteparish's win sent them above Burley with Burley's conquerers, Lymington, close on their heels in 4th.
Things started well, skipper, Kieron Hudson won the toss and elected to bat. He and Jonny Beck set Burley off to a steady start putting on 122 for the first wicket. This took longer than on previous Saturdays. Hudson took over 100 balls for his 43 before he was caught on the long on boundary. Beck went on to complete his century but was then ajudged LBW for 114. James Edworthy made just 13 and Steve Doick 9 in a bid to boost the total and some hard hitting from Wayne Tucker got the total up to 213.
In reply, wickets were hard to come by on a batting strip and Mark Gannaway dealt with what was bowled at him, passing 50 before eventually falling to James Edworthy for 75. But it was the aggressive hitting from Peter Tapper (33) and Hugo Ambrose (31*) that eventually saw Lymington over the line with just 1 ball to spare. Both batsmen having been dropped earlier in their innings.
A rude awakening and perhaps the kick up the proverbial backside that Burley need to push on, not only to promotion into County Division 4 but also heading into the Stone Cup Final on Friday against Langley Manor.
