Burley Cricket Club

Pylewell Park v Burley Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 10 Aug 2013 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 8 runs

Match report Burley headed off for their first trip to Pylewell Park in over ten years knowing that victory was vital to remain in the hunt for promotion. The track looked indifferent and starved of water and both captains wanted to bowl first. It was Chris Cooper of Pylewell that won that toss and the Burley openers had to strap on their pads and build an innings.
Openers Kieron Hudson and Jonathan Beck made good headway in the early overs on a track that was unpredictable and 'helpful' to say the least, for the bowlers. The score raced to 40-0 from 6 overs, Hudson crashing Cubitt for three successive 4's. Beck found it difficult to repeat the form of the previous week and fell in the 7th over for just 13 to Woolgar (inside edge onto pad and onto middle stump). Hudson continued with Rob Munro but a change in bowling saw Carl Brooks and Clive Kitcher brought into the attack. Both bowled well, Brooks maintained a good line and length with his medium paced away swing and Kitcher bowled back of a length, the pitch helping the ball to spit in all directions. Munro was adjudged LBW and Hudson (43) was caught at cover, both wickets falling to Kitcher. Alec Moorman and Wayne Tucker took on the innings, seeing Kitcher and Brooks finish their spells and then attacking the remaining bowling attack. Moorman continued his form from the previous week hitting 57 including eight 4's and a six before eventually being Run Out and Tucker made 47 before falling LBW to the spin of Cooper after hitting the biggest six of the day and losing the ball.
In reply, in the absence of James Edworthy, Wayne Tucker opened up the bowling with a tight 10 over spell going for just 26 runs. At the other end Jim Burry was unlucky to have Woolgar dropped twice at slip before he had scored (he went on to score 69 with some aggressive hitting). The breakthrough was hard to find and Hudson continued to rotate the bowling attack. It finally came in the 23rd over, Ben Crowley having Woolgar trapped in front. Carl Brooks kept the innings going but a lack of impetus from Dai Thomas (just 27 from 81 balls in 110 minutes) at the other end saw Pylewell fall well behind the required run rate and needing 8, 9 and then 10 a over for victory. The increasing run rate meant that wickets began to fall and when Wayne Tucker caught Clive Kitcher at long off victory looked assured for Burley - Pylewell needed 28 from the final over. However Ben Dolbear hadn't read the Burley script and some hard hitting and quick running saw Ben Crowley's final over go for 20 runs and although Burley had claimed their much needed victory (22 points) it had ended closer than had seemed possible some 10 overs previous.
Mottisfont continued their charge at the top of the table with a resounding win over relegation bound Sway and Whiteparish remain in second, but now only a point above Burley after a third tie of the season, this time against Exbury. Lymington remain hot on the heels of Burley, just 0.8 adrift. With three games to go, including Burley hosting Mottisfont on the last day and Lymington due to play Whiteparish next Saturday all is still to play for.
