Burley Cricket Club 1st XI v Parley on Sat 04 May 2013 at 12.30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 96 runs
Match report
Saturday cricket got underway at The Green with a resounding win against Parley in a 2013 curtain raising friendly that was played in the true spirit of cricket.
Winning the first toss of the season, skipper Kieron Hudson elected to bat in the sunshine. Opening the innings with Jonny Beck it was Hudson who set the tempo for the 40 over innings, keeping the scoreboard ticking. Beck was the first wicket lost, playing down the wrong line, bowled for 12. Paul Hanson faired similarly bowled for 14. Hudson was now partnered with Steve Doick and the pair enjoyed a partnership of 79 and with the score on 148-2 Hudson retired 100 not out.
Two quick wickets saw both Wayne Tucker and Guy Clifford LBW to Will Carter bringing James Edworthy to the crease with 10 overs to go. In double quick time Edworthy set about the Parley bowling attack quickly overtaking Steve Doick finishing with 72 from just 34 balls (including 9 6's). Doick also finished not out on 56.
The 279 total looked imposing and Parley had the worst possible start losing two early wickets to the bowling Wayne Tucker, who finished his 8 over spell with 4-40. Only Darren Pritchard and Steve Roe offered resistance and runs with 48 and 29 respectively. Parley's crop of young cricketers showed good technique with the bat but found it difficult to score. However, they showed the promise of very good cricketers in future years (Jake Markham, Alex Sands, Luke Mortimer, Ben Alfert, Zach Harris and Will Carter). The Parley innings ended on 183 with Paul Hanson showing a return to the bowling arena, taking 3-12, with, in his own words, more line and length balls in 3 overs than in the last 3 years.
Overall, a good afternoon's cricket and some valuable early season practice for all (some more than others!!).
