Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Newport Gents on Sun 02 Jun 2013 at 14:30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 171 runs

Match report It was a record-breaking day for Burley Sunday XI, amassing their highest ever total of 330, as they crushed Newport Gentlemens XI by 171 runs. Winning the toss on a hot sunny day, skipper Daniel Tucker had no hesitation in electing to bat. New Indian recruit MD Shiek stamped his authority by telling the skipper he would open the batting before telling 1st team captain Kieron Hudson to get down the other end and let him face up to the first ball. He may have regretted his decision as he was clean bowled 4th ball of the innings trying to beat the ball out of the New Forest! Jason Robertson joined Hudson at the crease and the pair put on 46 before Hudson (23) was caught and bowled by A Jones in the 9th over. At drinks (18 overs) Burley were well set on 125-2 with Jason Robertson and Charlie Moorman going along nicely. Moorman was dismissed shortly after drinks and with the score on 150-3 after 21 the already impressive run-rate picked up rapidly and Burley added a whopping 180 runs in the last 14 overs! Robertson retired on 102, to allow others some batting practice. Greg Jones also retired on 58 and after the final wicket of Tucker (1), Ollie Thew (41*) and James Edworthy (42*) ended the innings in style.

After tea and with Newport Gents having to score their runs at a rate of 9.5 an over Burley were obviously in no danger of the target being reached and with 8 bowlers used they managed to restrict Newport to just 159-7, with only Nathan Smith (65*) preventing Burley from taking all 10 wickets. Charlie Lambourne was the pick of the bowlers with 2-27 off 6 overs. MD Shiek opened the attack impressively and picked up his first wicket for the club and proved to be a big hit with his team-mates, his enthusiastic bowling and appealing providing great entertainment.

Overall a thumping win from a Burley side very strong in all departments and with both Saturday sides starting the season strongly hopefully a successful season for all three teams lies ahead.
