Burley Cricket Club

Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v BSSA on Sun 30 Jun 2013 at 14:30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report On a very hot and sunny day whichever captain won the toss would be hugely popular with their team-mates. Unfortunately Daniel Tucker lost the toss and BSSA skipper Mike Jones unsurprisingly made no hesitation in electing to bat first in a 40 over contest. Burley's opening pair of James Rapson and Marcus Reynolds made sure runs were hard to come by for BSSA and although early wickets never came Burley kept the run-rate in check. Rapson bowled an economical opening spell of 6-2-8-0 and Reynolds' 8 over spell with the new ball went for just 26. Charlie Lambourne backed up the opening pair well and it was Lambourne who made the breakthrough in the 20th over bowling Mike Jones for 31. At the half-way stage BSSA were only one wicket down but with only 71 on the board. Matt Fletcher, making his seam-bowling return, picked up two quick wickets, firstly having L Webb caught at mid-off before Callum Maher made a smart leg-side stumping to dismiss Gary Jenkins for 42. David McWilliam (51*) and Dan Clark (30) increased the run-rate and McWilliam was able to guide BSSA past the 200 mark. However their score of 201-6 was below par and credit goes to the Burley bowlers for never allowing BSSA to push on to a bigger total.

In reply Burley got off to a slow start with opener Alex Martin struggling to keep the scoreboard ticking over, and he was bowled in the 5th over for one. Callum Maher then joined Kieron Hudson at the crease and the pair put on 89 in just over 10 overs before Hudson chipped to mid-wicket for a fluent 65. In came Greg Jones to join Maher and with Burley well set on 97-2 off 16 they were well in control of the game. However, Greg Jones was keen to end the game quickly and blasted his way to an unbeaten 80 to guide Burley to victory in just 26 overs. Jones had only been at the crease for ten overs and his innings included 11 boundaries and four big sixes, being particularly harsh on L Webb, his two overs costing a whopping 41 runs, and the game was ended when Webb bowled 5 wides.

Overall a good effort in the field by Burley followed by a very emphatic run chase and great entertainment provided by Kieron Hudson, Callum Maher and Greg Jones. Next up for Burley is Robins CC in another home fixture.
