Burley Cricket Club

Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Robins CC on Sun 07 Jul 2013 at 14:30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report On the hottest day of the year so far that could only mean one thing - another lost toss for skipper Daniel Tucker and Burley in the field first again. Robins got off to a positive start, hitting 6 boundaries in the first 6 overs before Matt Fletcher made the breakthrough in the 7th over, E Day being caught by Tucker for 22. Greg Jones came on to slow the scoring rate and he accounted for the wicket of opener J Spiers, skying to Alex Martin at mid-off for 25. At drinks at the half-way stage on 20 overs Robins were on 81-2. That became 81-3 when Jones cleaned bowled P Kermore the 2nd ball after drinks. Greg Jones finished his spell with very economical figures of 5-3-3-2. Robins kept the scoreboard ticking over during an encouraging spell of bowling from young leg-spinner Tom Allam and also Dan Maher. Allam was unfortunate not to claim his first wicket when Maher put down a difficult chance off the bat of skipper Mike Adams. Adams was dismissed for 57 in the 34th over when Charlie Moorman bowled him. With Robins on 198 with 5 overs to go a score of over 230 looked in reach but some tight bowling at the death from Alex Martin and Kieron Hudson restricted Robins to 215-7 from 40 overs.

In reply Burley got off to a decent start and had 24 on the board after 5. However Burley were pegged back when Jones was caught in the 6th over before Hudson was unfortunately bowled in the next over, when playing a defensive shot the ball spun backwards and knocked the bails off. Next up was the even more fortuitous wicket of Charlie Moorman, being run out at the non-strikers end when the bowler unintentionally deflected the ball back on to the stumps with Moorman being short of his ground. With Burley in trouble at 44-3 off 10, specialist blocker Daniel Tucker came to the crease to join his vice captain Alec Moorman. Tucker done the blocking while Moorman done the counter-attacking, taking the game to the Robins bowlers. The pair frustrated the bowlers, with Moorman keeping to the required run-rate before he was stumped the ball after bringing up his 100. It was a very mature innings to dig Burley out of trouble and putting them back on track to win the game, in a dominating partnership of 108 in 17 overs. The next over Tucker was bowled, leaving Alex Martin and Dan Maher the challenge of 68 in 74 balls. Martin dominated the strike in partnerships of 15 with Maher and 23 with Tom Allam, and when Allam was out Burley needed 30 in 5 overs. Martin carried on the responsibility taking Burley to touching distance of victory before being bowled on 51 attempting a ridiculous ramp shot over the wicket-keepers head. That bought Matt Fletcher to the crease with just 7 to win off 10 balls, and after surviving a strong LBW appeal first ball Big Fletch beat the next ball over cow corner for 6 to level the scores before clipping the next ball to the boundary to guide Burley home in an exciting finish.

Overall, a very well contested and enjoyable game, with Burley coming through a tougher test to keep the streak going, and will be in for another challenging contest next week when Compton & Chandlers Ford are the visitors.
