Burley Cricket Club Won by 32 runs

Match report Stone Cup Final

On a glorious evening, with sun shining and support in their numbers, Burley arrived to take on a Langley Manor side playing on their home ground, in front of a large home support for the right to be crowned New Forest Stone Cup Champions 2013. Under the watchful eye of the two umpires skippers Kevin Cresswell of Langley and Kieron Hudson of Burley tossed up - first blood Langley Manor. Cresswell elected to field first and so it was to battle. But it was not so much first blood to Langley Manor as only blood to Langley Manor. The evening belonged to Burley who from the first ball took charge of the game against their higher league opponents, Hudson clipping the ball into the legside for 3. It was Hudson who would provide the backbone for the innings and it was he and Jonathan Beck again who provided a secure base from which to build an innings. Both scored at a run a ball and it wasn't until the 11th over that Langley managed to break the partnership. Beck was bowled by Jamie Terris for 29. James Edworthy joined Hudson and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Hudson went passed his 50 before Edworthy was bowled for 15 by Jon Wilkinson, bringing Alec Moorman to the crease. Moorman lasted just two balls, stumped off of the bowling of Tim Rogers (slightly dubiously) in the last over. Hudson had lost the majority of the strike over the final two overs making it difficult for one big final push but finished 66 not out with Wayne Tucker at the other end 0*. Burley had posted a healthy 126 from their 18 overs largely thanks to Hudson's knock and another solid opening stand of 80 with Jonathan Beck.
Langley Manor started well, Tim Rogers crashing two fours with Kevin Cresswell solid at the other end. 6 a over would get Langley in the game but at the end of the 3rd over James Edworthy bowled the dangerous Rogers for 9. Jamie Terris joined Cresswell and moved the score on to 36-1 after six overs which provided a good basis to build, but the belief and desire in the Burley outfit had no intention of losing their grip on the cup. The introduction of Wayne Tucker broke the back of the Langley innings. Terris caught by a wonderful diving catch, running in from long off by Andy Dilworth, Luke Jerram bowled, missing a full toss and Jon Wilkinson also bowled. Tuckers figures of 3-13 from his four overs put Burley in a commanding position. All now rested on Cresswell if Langley were to wrestle the cup from Burley's grip. When he was caught at mid on by James Edworthy off of the bowling of Jonathan Beck the game was Burley's. Beck cleared the lower, middle order of the Langley innings, picking up 4-8 from his two overs and Edworthy completed the wickets bowling Jake Swift with the second ball of the final over.
Burley had dominated from start to finish, Hudson picking up the Cup from New Forest Cricket Association President Vic Loveless, as well as collecting the Man of the Match award from umpire Tony Leadbetter. Burley had eclipsed the memory of defeat in the final at the hands of Sway 3 years earlier, losing just 4 wickets in total on their journey to victory (3 of them in the final). An impressive season continues, 8 victories and a tie in ten league outings and lying 3rd in Division 1 West and now the Stone Cup and with a second XI sitting 2nd in their respective league the promise of a hugely successful season is beginning to come to fruition.
