Hythe & Dibden II v Burley Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report Burley edged a very close affair with Hythe & Dibden in Regional Division 1. Put into bat, and missing regular opening partner Jonathan Beck, Burley skipper opened alongside Michael Moorman and the two put on an impressive 105 for the first wicket. Moorman was first to fall for 42, bowled by Wayne Effney. Hudson was joined by James Edworthy and the two continued to build the innings but on 77 Hudson was cruelly run out at the non strikers end as Todd Powell put down a caught and bowled chance but the ball fell onto the stumps leaving Hudson stranded. Edworthy and Wayne Tucker piled on yet more runs with Edworthy falling to White for 60 and Tucker to Powell for 28, both caught behind the wicket. The innings was closed out by Craig Doick (9 not out) breaking his run of 4 consecutive golden ducks, and Ray Gunn (4 not out). Burley had posted 245-4 .

In reply Mike Bowman and Kevin James set about the target scoring freely off of some wayward bowling. Tucker was brought into the attack to replace the expensive Jim Burry and had Bowman caught at extra cover by Hudson for 25. Burley were convinced they had James stumped but the decision was given not out and it looked as if Burley would pay as James continued to score at will. When Pates came to the wicket he found runs hard to come by early on but soon found his stride and also scored regularly off of a below par attack. Tucker had James caught by Craig Doick as he skied the ball to cover but Pates continued as wickets began to fall at the other end. Michael Moorman made runs harder to get and was picking up wickets in a spell that showed how it should be done and in the field Todd Straughan, on debut, saved runs with his tenacious fielding (despite shelling 3 catches). With 6 overs to go Hythe wanted just 42 to win and with Pates still at the crease this looked a straight forward task. But it was Moorman who finally got Pates in the 40th over caught by a diving Hudson running in from the cover boundary. At the start of the final over, thanks to 3 tidy overs from Doick and continued pressure from Moorman, Hythe required 11 to win. Moorman and his Burley team mates held their nerve with Hythe scoring just 5 to ensure that Burley remain in 3rd place in the league just behind Hyde, with Suttoners still leading the way.
