Southampton Travellers v Burley Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 30 Aug 2014 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Burley completed their league season with a trip to Southampton Travellers. Before the game Burley knew that a win coupled with a loss for leaders Suttoners would leave Burley as champions. Burley completed their part of the equation but Suttoners ran out easy victors over Hyde and Burley end the season as worthy runners-up and will look forward to County Division 4 cricket next season. Burley won the toss and asked the Travellers to bat first but the Southampton outfit found runs difficult to come by as Phil Turner bowled his 6 over spell for just 7 runs. It was he who also picked up the first wicket thanks to a smart catch by James Edworthy at extra cover. The remainder of the Burley attack also bowled impressive spells with each of them, Wayne Tucker, James Edworthy, Craig Doick and Jonathan Beck all picking up 2 wickets a piece. An impressive fielding display meant that the Travellers amassed just 123.
Once again the Burley opening pair of Kieron Hudson (34) and Jonathan Beck (61) shared a century opening partnership and it looked as if the pair might cross the finish line without loss but both fell in successive overs with mis-timed shots. It was James Edworthy and Alec Moorman who saw Burley over the line and ensured the full 24 points. It was just the phone call from Dean Park confirming Suttoners victory that dampened the closing stages of a successful season.
