Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Merlin on Sun 04 May 2014 at 14:30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Burley Sunday XI started the 2014 season in fine form with a comprehensive 6 wicket victory over Merlin CC. Skipper Daniel Tucker won the first toss of the year and inserted Merlin in to bat. Merlin got off to a watchful start, with James Rapson and Jim Burry sharing the new ball. It was Rapson who made the breakthrough in the 7th over when Daniel Tucker took a sharp low catch at point to dismiss L Seal. Burley then seized control of the innings in the 9th over when Rapson bowled M Edwards before Jonny Blundell ran out Merlin skipper Steve Bristow in the same over. When Jim Burry trapped M Emm LBW for a duck in the very next over Merlin were in deep trouble at 38-4 off 10. The opening bowlers were replaced by Jonny Blundell and Marcus Reynolds. Blundell, playing his first game since 2012 after missing the whole of the 2013 season , made an encouraging return, bowling an economical spell of 5-2-6-0. Reynolds picked up his first wicket of the season when C New holed out to the safe hands of Matt Fletcher to leave Merlin 5 down for just 43. J Adams and J James then staged the recovery with a partnership of 81 before Dan Maher broke their partnership with the wicket of James. Maher then took a couple of catches off his own bowling to finish with impressive figures of 3-32 off his 7 over spell. J Adams was the star of the Merlin innings with his attacking innings of 73 guiding Merlin to 163-9 off their 35 overs.

Callum Maher and Alex Martin took to the crease after tea and Burley were in control of the innings right from the start of their reply, Callum Maher hitting 13 off the first over. The attacking pair made a fluent start with none of the Merlin bowlers able to slow the run-rate down. Burley already had 85 on the scoreboard when Martin was brilliantly caught on the boundary for 45 in the 13th over. Wicket-keeper Ray Gunn joined Maher at the crease. Shortly after Maher hit a 6 to bring up his 50 before being bowled in the same over, trying to clear the boundary once more. James Rapson then carried on where Martin and Maher had left off and with Gunn (8) and Dan Maher (12) falling cheaply, Rapson finished the run-chase with a 6 to finish unbeaten on 38.

Overall a good start to the new season, with a top effort in the field and from all the bowlers before a powerful run chase, an innings containing 16 boundaries and no less than 8 sixes, saw Burley win the match with 9.1 overs to spare.
