Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Bramshaw on Sun 18 May 2014 at 14:30
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs

Match report Burley Sunday XI suffered their first defeat of the season at home to a strong Bramshaw side. On the hottest day of the year so far that meant it was inevitable skipper Daniel Tucker would lose the toss and opposing captain Joe Coombs unsurprisingly elected to bat first. Bramshaw only turned up with 9 players, but with several of them being first-teamers they will be one of the strongest teams Burley play this year. Burley made a promising start when Charlie Lambourne bowled opener Matt Clasby for a duck, however other opener M Kingston soon made his intentions clear. He was not going to hang around and took the attack to the bowlers, albeit with more than his fair share of luck. When Kingston was finally bowled by James Edworthy in the 14th over he had scored 86 of Bramshaw's 113. The very next over Jonny Blundell bowled J Martin before having Ram Ramchandah caught behind to turn the game back in Burley's favour with Bramshaw on 113-4. However, Burley toiled in the heat and Joe Coombs (90) and Josh Arnold (44*) put on a partnership of 140 to take Bramshaw to 258-5 at the end of their 35 overs. There was no doubt Burley had let the game slip, Bramshaw had rode their luck and scored more than they should have, with Dan Maher (a very difficult chance), Daniel Tucker and Charlie Moorman all guilty of dropped catches in a miserable day in the field. Jonny Blundell was the pick of the bowlers, his figures of 8-2-42-2 were impressive in the context of the innings.

After tea, Burley would only have 10 batters to pursue their run chase, with batsman Alex Martin only making himself available for the majority of the first innings. Burley got off to the worst possible start when Callum Maher was bowled in the 2nd over. James Rapson and Charlie Moorman then fell cheaply and Burley were in danger of a quick defeat at 39-3. However, all-rounder Jim Burry then joined James Edworthy and the pair put on a brilliant partnership worth 111 in just under 14 overs. With Burley well placed on 145-3 off 20 it was the wicket of Burry that put Bramshaw back in control. With James Edworthy still there the win was still possible but a couple more quick wickets, including the big wicket of Edworthy for a brilliant 79, left Burley in trouble at 163-7. Charlie Lambourne clearly hadn't given the game up though. It's fair to say Bramshaw did open the game up to some extent but take nothing away from Lambourne (76*) as he struck the ball sweetly to keep the game alive, dominating the strike and the runs in a partnership of 83 in 9.5 overs with Tucker. Burley were always just that little bit too much behind the game meaning Lambourne's efforts, including 10 boundaries and 3 sixes, were in vain and Burley ended on 247-8 falling 11 runs short.
