Coombe Bissett v Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 15 Jun 2014 at 13:30
Burley Cricket Club Won by 7 runs

Match report The first away day of the season for Burley Sunday XI saw a strong Burley side travel to the picturesque village of Coombe Bissett. After a team lunch at a friendly pub close by it was on to the impressive ground and it was clear that it was going to be a lovely spot for a game of cricket. With both teams boasting a record of played five, won four in 2014 it was all to play for. After losing the toss Burley were surprisingly asked to bat first in a 40 over contest. After the early loss of Moorman snr, Greg Thew joined James Edworthy at the crease and the pair soon had the scoreboard rattling along at a good pace and Coombe skipper Matt Mould may have been regretting his decision at the toss. The partnership was ended at 81 when Thew skied a catch to be dismissed for 49, including 4 sixes, to leave Burley on 95-2 off 14. However, Jack Mynott then turned the screw, beginning his spell with three consecutive maidens and picking up the key wicket of James Edworthy for 53 before having Steve Moorman stumped and Burley had faltered to 120-5 off 22. With lots of overs still to go James Rapson joined Alec Moorman in a partnership worth 50, and then added another 51 in a fluent partnership with Ian Edworthy (33*) and Burley had kick-started the innings and managed to post a competitive total of 239-7, Rapson being the last wicket to fall for a vital knock of 54.

After a lovely tea of sandwiches and home-made cakes, Burley's opening bowlers Rapson and Marcus Reynolds bowled tight spells, restricting Coombe Bissett to just 34 runs in the first 10. Reynolds picked up the first two wickets, before James Edworthy bowled the dangerous Jack Mynott for 40. Another wicket for James, a couple for his dad Ian, and one from Graham Woolgar had left Coombe reeling at 144-7 in the 34th over. Meanwhile, at the other end Zimbabwean all-rounder Brad Rouse had refused to give up despite the regular loss of partners, and eventually managed to find an ally in no.9 Rob Wilson-Harris. The pair savagely set about the Burley bowlers, targeting the shorter boundary, and in truth had taken the game much closer than Tucker would have liked. The pair had blasted 81 in no time at all and so it all came down to 16 runs required from the last over to be bowled by James Edworthy. A single off the first ball brought up a fine century for Rouse. Rapson took a fine catch in the deep the next ball to see the back of Wilson-Harris and only a further three singles along with four leg byes ensured that Burley completed victory by a 7-run margin despite the best efforts of Rouse (102*)
And so after a thrilling game of cricket, with several twists and turns, played hard but in good spirit, it was off back to the pub with the opposition to analyse the game over a beer or two.
