Abbotsbury v Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 10 Aug 2014 at 13:30
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Burley Sunday XI made the visit to the picturesque village of Abbotsbury, returning there for a fixture that used to be a regular in the fixture list but had somehow had an absence for a number of years. There have been fewer better places where Burley have played cricket, with the backdrop of rolling hills and countryside, in which St Catherine's Chapel is situated, and with Chesil beach in the background. Ian Edworthy, making the return to Abbotsbury cricket club where he spent 3 years many years ago, opened the innings with his son, James. The Edworthys again led the way carrying on with their great form. James was the first to fall for 53, before Charlie Moorman fell for 1 and Dan Maher first ball left the innings faltering. Ian, put on 38 with 14 year-old Dan Pullen, and then 70 with 13 year-old James Pullen before he retired on a faultless 131 in the 32nd over. The lower-order pushed Burley up to to a total of 269-6.
In the field, Matt Fletcher was in top form picking up three quick wickets to restrict Abbotsbury to 45-3. K Brian then got the innings back on track with some powerful hitting, being particularly harsh on Marcus Reynolds and Dan Maher, to keep up with the required run rate. The Pullen brothers both bowled nicely, particularly James with 5-0-11-1. When James Edworthy had K Brian (70) stumped in the 29th over Burley looked to be well on the way to victory with Abbotsbury still needing a further 100 runs off just 11 overs. Little did Burley know that walking out to the crease was Dorchester's batsman from the Southern Premier league, Simon Mitchem blasting an unbeaten 64 off not very many balls. Burley began to toil in the field with Maher having to leave early and then losing James Pullen for a few overs with an injured hand, no sign of a sub fielder being offered (as Burley had done in the first innings) meant Burley battled on with just 9. Meanwhile, Matt Fletcher returned to pick up another 3 wickets to finish with 6-44, but the match came down to 17 needed off the last over with one wicket left with Ian Edworthy to bowl it. Five from the first two balls got Mitchem off strike but Abbotsbury captain and no.11 Chas Duerdoth hit a massive 6 off the third ball. The next ball Duerdoth was adjudged lbw, but Burley sportingly called him back as it was clear he had hit the ball first. Duerdoth followed up with a boundary, meaning 2 runs off 1 ball was needed. Duerdoth didn't strike it cleanly but unfortunately James Pullen, nursing an injured hand, dropped a very difficult catch in the deep with the pair scampering two to complete the victory.
Not the outcome Burley had expected at the half-way stage, but nevertheless it was nice to play a competetive game after a number of one-sided games in recent weeks.
