Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v BSSA on Sun 08 May 2016 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 105 runs
Match report
On a hot, sunny day skipper Daniel Tucker lost the toss but Burley were surprisingly asked to bat. Kieron Hudson and vice-captain Jonny Blundell took first knock for Burley, the pair getting off to a patient start against the new ball. Hudson (18) was first to go - hitting straight back to the bowler - with the score on 38 after 14 overs. Dan Maher joined Blundell out in the middle - the pair running quickly between the wickets as well as putting away the bad ball - putting on 94 together in 13 overs before a weary Blundell was run out for a faultless 70 - his highest ever score with the bat! Maher was then involved in partnerships of 64 with James Edworthy (35) and then 67 with Alex Martin (40), Maher himself finishing unbeaten on a well-made 90, aided well by big-hitters Edworthy and Martin propelling Burley to a strong score of 263-4 off their 40 overs. From 73-1 at the halfway stage of the innings Burley had scored a whopping 190 off the last 20 overs as ten-man BSSA toiled away in the field.
After tea Carl Foster bowled an impressive spell of 8 overs, conceding just 21 runs, although not getting the rewards his efforts deserved. James and Fisher took a liking to Russ Asher at the other end, getting BSSA off to a good start in reply. However, Jim Burry came on to tighten things up, with the opening batters frustrating Burley up until the drinks break at 20 overs with 87 on the board. The drinks break coming at the right time for Burley as 13 year-old bowler Scott Menary made the breakthrough with the very first ball after the resumption. With BSSA placed at 128-1 after 28 overs and not threatening to get the runs, Blundell was introduced into the attack and responded with a double-wicket maiden - firstly having James caught behind before trapping the dangerous Grant lbw for a duck. BSSA then collapsed like a pack of cards - James Edworthy picking up three cheap wickets with his off-spin, another wicket for the impressive Menary, and Alex Martin finishing off with 2 wickets to bowl BSSA out for 158 in the 36th over.
Two wins out of two for Burley Sunday XI, both by a big margin. Burley travel to Chalke Valley next Sunday looking to avenge our defeat to them last year.
