Chalke Valley v Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 15 May 2016 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report After two comprehensive wins Burley Sunday XI came unstuck against Chalke Valley in their first away game of the season. Burley arrived at the picturesque ground of Chalke Valley expecting their opponents to be one of the strongest sides in the fixture card this year. Skipper Daniel Tucker lost the toss, opposing captain Harry Hitchings inviting Burley to bat first in a 35 over contest. Burley got off to a slow start, losing both openers, before James Edworthy (80) and Kieron Hudson (61) put on a partnership of 131 to take Burley up to a competetive total of 207-4 off their 35 overs. A total in this range never looked on but Burley piled on 106 runs in the last 10 overs - more than the 101 they scored in the first 25. Greg Willoughby was the pick of the bowlers - his 7 over opening spell conceding just 10 runs - this wouldn't be his only contribution in thwarting Burley.
Into the second half of the game, Burley knew it would be tough going - missing three main bowlers in Jonny Blundell, Jim Burry and Carl Foster, there was a feeling of Burley being short of wicket-taking options. 15 year-old Jack Gray and 13 year-old Scott Menary were trusted in opening the bowling - Willoughby - now opening the batting, being brutal on anything short - particularly on Gray. Before long it was clear that Willoughby was the key batter and if he was still there at the latter stages of the innings then Chalke Valley would come out on top. In a flat performance from Burley in the field Willoughby was rarely troubled and eventually saw his side home with an unbeaten 128 to seal a 5 wicket victory. Burley did manage to take the game to the 33rd over - Dan Maher being the pick of the bowlers with 3-19.
Burley will look to bounce back to winning ways this Sunday when they return to Burley School Green and welcome Sway. Finally, a special mention should go to Charles Moorman - in making his first appearance of the season meaning 2016 is his 50th consecutive playing year for Burley Cricket Club. This is an achievement that will be celebrated on Sunday 29th May at Burley when the Sunday XI take on a Charles Moorman invitational XI.
