Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Compton & Chandlers Ford on Sun 07 Aug 2016 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Burley Sunday XI produced a fine all-round performance to beat visitors Compton & Chandlers Ford for the first time since 2012. Compton & Chandlers Ford are probably the strongest opposition Burley play each season, however, this year they were slightly weaker than previous years. Opposition skipper Scott Spearing won the toss and quickly elected to bat first. Jonny Blundell made the early breakthrough by bowling Casey in the 3rd over. R Spearing then joined McCarthy at the crease - the pair being very watchful against the new ball. At drinks at 20 overs Burley had restricted Compton + CF to just 58 runs for the loss of one wicket. Dan Pullen had bowled a very impressive 8 overs with the new ball, conceding just 18 runs. Blundell (6 overs for 14) and Finley King (4 overs for 17) had also bowled tidy first spells to keep the batsmen at bay. Carl Foster, playing for the first time since May, made the 2nd breakthrough when he bowled R Spearing for 25. McCarthy was the next to fall for a well-made 83 when Blundell returned to account for his wicket. Scott Spearing then joined R Gasson (48*) at the crease and the pair quickly turned the screw, particularly Spearing who smashed an unbeaten quick-fire 50 as Compton + CF plundered 99 runs off the final 10 overs to finish on 227-3.
In reply, Greg Jones got Burley off to a flier striking 4 boundaries and 3 sixes as Burley brought up the 50 in just the 6th over. Jones then fell in the next over, chasing a wide one and slashing straight to point, for a classy 37. Jim Burry then picked up from where Jones left off - hitting 8 boundaries in his knock of 33, including 5 consecutively in one over from Thorne, before Thorne had the last laugh in his next over - Burry holing out to long-off. At the other end Franks had already fallen for 11 and Alec Moorman had fortuitously survived being dropped first ball - a costly error from Compton + CF as Moorman went on to make 43 before edging behind. That left Burley on 158-4 off 25 overs, still needing 70 off 15 overs, and with not a great deal of batting left to come much hope rested on Dan Maher. When Marcus Reynolds was bowled Burley needed 47 from the final 10 overs. Tucker came in and knicked off behind, Pullen was bowled first ball, and King was caught and bowled as Burley looked to be collapsing to defeat. Foster came in to join Maher in the 33rd over, 36 still needed. This was in fact the first time Foster had walked out to bat since his school days 15 days ago! No wonder number 11 Blundell was a nervous wreck pacing up and down praying 'Fozzie' remembered which end of the bat to hold! However, Foster supported Maher more than adequately - Maher playing a blinder in scoring freely and farming the strike, bringing up his half-century in the process. As the runs were ticked off at a good rate - it came down to one hit away - cue Carl Foster edging the winning boundary past the helpless wicketkeeper - much to the jubilation of the Burley players on the boundary edge. The pair had put on 36 in just 4 overs to see Burley home with 3 overs to go - Foster finishing on 10 and Maher playing a faultless innings to finish on 54.
A thrilling victory for Burley and a good team performance to overcome a good opposition, in which Burley showed good team spirit.
