Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Clyst st. George on Sun 04 Sep 2016 at 13:30
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 20 runs
Match report
Three consecutive defeats became four consecutive defeats as Burley's losing rot continued against Clyst St. George from Exeter, who traveled with a 15 man touring party. Led by ex-Burley player Ian Edworthy, Clyst, batted first in a 40 over contest. Clyst started slowly with Dan Pullen and Rob Franks bogging them down and keeping runs down and picking up both openers cheaply. However, during the second half of the innings Burley became very sloppy in the field and allowed Clyst to score a lot more runs than they should have done. No. 3 D Takle retired on a patient 52 but first team captain C Ferro was the best batsman on show - retiring on a classy 102. Some late hitting from the lower order guided Clyst up to 226-4 (and 2 retirees).
Kieron Hudson and Alec Moorman began Burley's chase - Moorman surviving a couple of early drops to go on to make an unbeaten 52 and sportingly retiring (with good intentions but probably a bit early), Ray Gunn joined Hudson and scored an aggressive 20 before being caught at mid-off by Ian Edworthy as Burley lost their first official wicket on 120(ish). Hudson then reached 50 and retired and when Alex Martin (16) fell in the same fashion as Gunn Burley still required 80 in 8 overs and their chances looked doomed. Maher gave it a good go, finishing unbeaten on 27, but as the game petered out Burley were 20 short when the final ball was bowled.
Overall, a decent game of cricket - one which Burley probably threw away but nonetheless an enjoyable evening was had by all as a party of 35 consisting of both teams and supporters headed out for a curry and a few slippery nipples! (Sambuca mixed with Baileys Irish Cream before anybody questions the etiquette of a Burley CC social event!)
