Match report It was a special day for the Moorman family on Sunday as the Burley School Green hosted Charlie Moorman's testimonial to celebrate Charlie's 50th consecutive playing year for Burley Cricket Club. To mark the occasion Burley Sunday XI hosted a Charlie Moorman XI he had selected, including his three sons, a few 'old boys' he spent many years playing with, and others who he has played with over the years. The toss was scrapped - the Sunday XI skipper Daniel Tucker inviting Charlie's XI to bat first. Before the game Charlie was presented with a new Burley shirt bearing his name on the back with the number '50' below. Charlie walked out to open the innings, making his way through a guard of honour before taking guard for the first ball. Charlie and Michael (22) got off to a good start before Michael was bowled by Reynolds. Wayne Tucker (23) was next to go being caught at slip by Jim Burry off the bowling of Scott Menary. The man of the moment was next man out, Charlie edging Jack Gray to Reynolds at gully for 13 in the 16th over. Stuart Pateman (34) and Alec Moorman (30) then put the momentum back into the innings with a partnership of 61 before a cluster of three wickets fell quickly - Moorman being bowled by Edworthy, Matt Fletcher being caught off Danny Maher before Pateman was also bamboozled by Maher - nicking through to Dan Tucker. This left them at 142-6. Some hard hitting from Stuart Feltham (17*) took Charlie's XI to 179-8 at the end of their 35 overs - an innings that saw all ten outfielders used to bowl.
After a light tea, Burley got off to a good start with a 43 run opening partnership before Jack Gray (20) was well held by Alec Moorman. Jim Burry (41) and Alex Martin (49) initially found boundaries hard to come by but kept the scoreboard ticking over. James Edworthy chipped in with 27 but a flurry of wickets left Burley needing 15 off the last three overs. Stuart Feltham had been the pick of the bowlers with 3-26 off 8 overs. Dan Maher was not out at the end on 13 but it was left to number 9 Scott Menary to hit the winning run with four balls to go - a fitting end that on a day when one players longevity at the cricket club was being celebrated it was actually the youngest player - aged 13 - on the pitch that hit the winning run in a special ending to conclude a match that panned out perfectly - great fun had by all on a baking hot day with 19 batters and 19 bowlers used between both sides in a game that couldn't have finished any closer.
After the match the barbecue was fired up and players, families, friends and all enjoyed some well-earned food and drinks as well as being treated to lots of old cricket photographs over the last 50 years that Burley CC legend Simon Rowley had brought up and put on display boards. Congratulations once more to Charles Moorman - here's hoping to many more years yet!
