Burley Cricket Club 1st XI v Amesbury on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs

Match report Despite a spirited effort to gain victory Burley fell just short of the winning post losing out by just 11 runs to Amesbury. Burley again tried to be masters of their own downfall, dropping five catches in the Amesbury innings as the visitors amassed 230-7 in their 45 overs. Andy Renshaw scored quickly at the top of the innings hitting a quickfire 68. After just 14 overs the score stood at 84-0, but some tight bowling from Wayne Tucker (10-2-28-2) helped to slow the Amesbury innings, however, a lack of further wickets and steady runs from Sam Dando (53) kept momentum. Jaydon Atkinson added late impetus to his own steady start and finished the innings 70*, Mark Wheeler and Matt Fletcher also picked up 2 wickets each for the home side. The final total of 230 was below par given the start but would still prove to be enough.
In reply Burley lost Craig Doick to his first ball, bowled by Gareth Dobson but a series of 50 run partnerships between Kieron Hudson and firstly Alec Moorman (20) and later in the innings Wayne Tucker (21) and then with Alan Wright (17) kept Burley just about in the game. In the mix of these partnerships Burley also lost Michael Moorman, first ball, and James Brown. Hudson remained unbeaten at the other end and with just 4.2 overs remaining was joined at the wicket by Matt Fletcher. Fletcher's hard-hitting put Burley in real contention. Their 18 ball partnership of 35 saw Hudson secure his first league century of the season and had Amesbury dispatching fielders to all boundaries. Fletcher fell for 20 from just 11 balls to a one-handed catch on the long-on boundary with just 8 balls remaining and Burley still requiring 18 to win. With Jim Burry at the crease Burley managed a single off of the remaining two balls of the penultimate over leaving 17 from 6 balls. Another single to Burry from the second ball of the final over meant 16 from the last 4 deliveries. In trying to acquire the four 4's needed Hudson was bowled by Andy Renshaw for 103, Steven Moorman hit his first ball for four but two sixes from the final two balls was always going to be unlikely. 11 runs short in a good competitive game keeps both teams securely in mid-table, with Burley journeying to Southampton next week to face the 'Travellers'.
