Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI v Parley III on Sat 06 May 2017 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
There was a feeling of frustration and thoughts of 'what could have been' for Burley 2nd XI as they began their league campaign with a 7-wicket defeat against Parley III. Skipper Daniel Tucker lost the coin toss and after some thought opposing skipper Steve Laird opted to field first and allow Burley to set a target. This suited Burley as opening batsman Alex Martin could only play the first innings of the match - albeit it meant Burley would later field with just 10. Burley were unfortunate to lose Pete Stacey early - fresh from his pre-season ton, Stacey was out of luck as he was bowled off his pads. Neil Squire came and went early to leave Burley on 41-2. Mark Randell-Turner joined Martin in the middle and the pair began to rebuild before Randell-Turner (14) was bowled in the over before drinks with Martin at the other end going well on 50. Jonny Blundell lasted only until the over after drinks before Ali Clamp aided Martin in another recovery mission before Clamp (18) fell to a sharp catch at mid-wicket to leave Burley struggling on 116-5 off 29 overs and in danger of not reaching 200. However, Dan Squire joined Martin and the pair batted beautifully in a partnership of 86 in 12 overs, with Alex Martin reaching a faultless century, to gain Burley maximum batting bonus points as they passed 200. Martin holed out for 122, Dan Squire also with a valuable 28 not out, as Burley finished on 207-7.
Parley started brightly before Jonny Blundell broke the opening partnership on 32, bowling Rob O'Sullivan before repeating the trick the very next ball to no.3 Spencer Hopkins to lift Burley spirits. Steve Roe dug out the hat-trick ball before settling in with Steve Laird and regaining momentum for Parley, the pair taking advantage of the gaps in the field. The big moment came in the 20th over when the returning Blundell deceived Laird with a slower ball, Laird miscuing his shot, but Pete Stacey was unable to hold on to the catch at mid-on - a wicket that would have left Parley 3 wickets down for less than 100, with their best player back in the pavilion and four under-13s to come. Burley would have fancied their chances but it wasn't to be. There was further frustration when young bowlers Randell-Turner and Squire were both lost to injuries. Blundell returned for a 3rd spell to eventually dismiss Laird for 111 and finally break the match-winning partnership of 150 with Roe, however, with just 26 needed Roe saw Parley over the line with an unbeaten 67.
Next up for Burley 2nd XI is another home game - this time Lymington IV are the visitors.
