Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI v Ferndown Wayfarers III on Sat 27 May 2017 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Burley II managed to record their first win of the season, defeating Ferndown Wayfarers III in comfortable fashion. A depleted Ferndown Wayfarers side, containing only nine players, won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat first. Dan Mepham found the early breakthrough in just the 2nd over - picking up his first wicket of the season - Matty Beck taking the catch at gully. Before long, Burley in need of just eight wickets in total, had reduced Ferndown to 56-6 off 16 overs, Mepham and Jonny Blundell each with three wickets. Burley then got a little sloppy in the field - D Rose (43*) and J Pay (27) frustrating the home side - as well as Burley shelling several catches allowed Ferndown to pick up a further three batting points - Mepham returned to make the breakthrough - ending the partnership at 72, before Callum Maher came on to pick up the last wicket of skipper Gary Martin. Dan Mepham (4-39) and Jonny Blundell (3-32) had done the damage - aided by Callum Maher and Alex Martin taking three catches apiece.
After tea, Maher and Blundell set about the chase in a positive manner - the pair both passing fifty, putting on 112 for the first wicket before Blundell was bowled by Andy Mcintyre for 57. Maher then fell in Mcintyre's next over for 62, before losing Alex Martin and Oliver Clamp cheaply, leaving Pete Stacey to hit the winning runs as Burley stumbled over the line for the cost of more wickets than it had looked - nevertheless Burley took a maximum 24 points and enjoyed an early finish in the pub for celebratory drinks. Next up for Burley II is an away game against unbeaten Mudeford III.
