Hythe & Dibden IV v Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 11 runs

Match report Burley 2nd XI welcomed vice-captain Ray Gunn and opening bowler Jim Burry back into their line-up for their first appearances in the 2nd XI of the season as Burley traveled to Blackfield to take on a Hythe & Dibden side sitting in 2nd place in the league. Daniel Tucker won the toss and hesitantly elected to bat first, meaning Pete Stacey and Alex Martin took to the crease. After a watchful start the pair put on 54 for the first wicket before Stacey was bowled for 32 in the 18th over. Gunn joined Martin at the crease - the pair adding a further 44 together before Martin was caught behind to end the 31st over. With Burley on 98-2 with just 11 overs to go, number 4 Dan Maher added the impetus, with Gunn also stepping on the accelerator before being bowled for 40. Burry and Mepham both succumbed to P Long before some good running between the wickets from Maher and Tucker squeezed Burley up to 177, in which they claimed 6 of the 7 batting points on offer and gave Burley a competitive total to defend. With Maher finishing unbeaten on 30 it had been a solid performance from the top 4.
After tea, Hythe & Dibden openers, Toon and Long set about the chase in an extremely positive manner - and with the score on 42-0 after 6 overs it was evident Burley would need to create some openings quickly. Step forward Jim Burry, responding with a double wicket maiden to get Burley back into the game. Mepham picked up a wicket before Burry finished his opening spell with a 3rd wicket to leave H & D on 64-4 but with danger-man Toon still at the crease going well. Alex Martin entered the attack in place of Burry, and in his 2nd over picked up the vital wicket of the powerful Toon, bowling him for 56. The very next ball saw the closest of lbw shouts turned down, but two balls later another lbw shout saw Martin have his man and leave H & D 6 down with 96 on the board. It wasn't going to be a foregone conclusion however, as a partnership of 44 had looked to swing the game back in H & D's favour before another 2 wickets in 3 balls for Martin left H & D on 140-8 - still requiring a further 38 runs but with effectively just 1 wicket left due to being a player short. Surely Burley couldn't let this one slip? Last wicket pair - colt Noah Vaughan and skipper Richard Steadman frustrated the Burley attack, continuing to creep towards the unlikely target. With just 12 runs needed for victory, Burry having bowled out, and Maher set to replace him next over, Martin finally ended the stubborn partnership, bowling Steadman with the last ball of his 8th over, claiming his 5th wicket in the process, and more importantly completing an exciting victory for Burley 2nd XI. Martin had finished with 5-28 off 8 overs, with Noah Vaughan stranded on a well-crafted 34. Harvey-Farrell Jarvis also deserves credit for his solid and confident fielding performance.
In completing this much-needed victory Burley 2nd XI picked up 23 of the available 24 points and will be looking to build on this win when they host Bransgore III this coming Saturday.
