Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI v Bashley V on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 14.00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets (rain-reduced target of 158)
Match report
Burley 2nd XI recorded a convincing 8 wicket win over 2nd place Bashley V in a rain-affected match at Burley. Winning the toss, opposing skipper Chris Lewis elected to bat first. Bashley's innings was held together by number 3 Ian Britton - coming to the crease in the 3rd over Britton was still there at the end of the 42 overs - unbeaten on 84 as Bashley posted 181-7. It was a good effort from Burley to restrict the high-fliers - Stuart Feltham, making a long overdue comeback to play his first game in years, was the star of the bowling attack - his 10 deadly accurate overs yielding just 26 runs - picking up 3 wickets in the process.
During the first innings two rain-breaks totaling 29 minutes, meant that Burley were set a reduced target of 158 to win in 33 overs. With usual number 11 Steve Menary having to leave early, he was sent out to open the innings with Alex Martin. The master-plan worked a treat as Steve Menary got Burley off to a flier, much to the delight - and surprise - of his team-mates gathered outside the pavilion. Menary frustrated the bowlers with an array of attacking shots before he was caught on the 4th ball of the 3rd over - but having already cracked 4 boundaries he had achieved his highest-ever score of 19 and Burley were racing along on 25 after just 3 overs. Pete Stacey came and went cheaply - leaving Burley on 40-2 off 8. The in-form Dan Maher joined Martin out in the middle - Maher supporting Martin in an unbroken partnership of 119 in just 14 overs to steer Burley towards their target - Martin powering Burley over the line in just the 22nd over. Martin finished unbeaten on 86, with Maher on 31, as Burley romped home with more than 11 overs to spare.
Next up for Burley 2nd XI is a trip to Pennington to take on an in-form Sway side who have won 5 games on the bounce.
