Burley Cricket Club Social v Sway on Sat 29 Apr 2017 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report The new season finally got underway with a Burley XI hosting a Sway XI in a pre-season friendly at Burley. Skipper Daniel Tucker won the toss and asked Sway to have a bat first in a 40 over contest. Jim Burry and debutant Mark Wheeler shared the new ball - off-spinner Wheeler taking 4-62. At the half-way stage of the Sway innings Burley had 5 Sway batsmen back in the pavilion albeit with runs being scored at a good rate on a rock-hard wicket - when George Lewis (56) was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Dan Maher in the 20th over Sway were 113-5. In the 2nd half of the innings colt batsman Oscar Hudson benefited from wicket-keeper Ray Gunn sportingly opting against removing the bails to run him out early in his innings. The youngster held an end up putting on 54 with Dave Marshall before the latter was caught at mid-off by Tucker off the bowling of Ali Clamp. Burry returned to have Hudson caught at slip for 14 before some hard-hitting from Sway skipper Sam Nailor (54*) took Sway to a good total of 243-7 off their 40 overs. Oliver Clamp also deserves credit for a good spell of bowling during the last 10 overs of the innings - the young left-arm spinner conceding just 23 runs off his 5 overs.

After tea Pete Stacey and Alex Martin opened up for Burley - the pair getting off to a perfect start bringing up the 50 partnership in the 10th over and then the 100 partnership in just the 16th over. Martin was playing second fiddle to Stacey - Stacey was into the seventies when Martin was caught behind in the 19th over for 46 as the opening partnership was brought to an end on 131. Dan Maher joined Stacey and supported him in a partnership of 50 before Stacey walked off after scoring his hundred - a knock that included 18 boundaries and a six. In the next over Maher was bowled for 8 to leave Gunn and Ali Clamp at the crease with a further 63 runs needed off 13 overs. The pair comfortably knocked off the remaining runs - victory being secured when Gunn hit the winning boundary in the 37th over to finish unbeaten on 23 - Clamp at the other end with a good knock of 31*.
All in all a good game of cricket to start the season off with plenty of positives shown by Burley before league cricket starts next Saturday.
