Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v BSSA on Sun 14 May 2017 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 2 runs

Match report After Burley Sunday XI's win off the penultimate ball the previous week it would be hard to recreate a more exciting finish, and for the game to be taken down to the wire even further. This week BSSA were the visitors to Burley, skipper Daniel Tucker winning the toss and electing to bat first. Burley steadily ticked along, before losing both Piers Scott and Charles Moorman in the 9th over to leave them 40-2. Kieron Hudson was joined in the middle by Alex Martin - the pair putting on 76 together before Martin was caught at mid-on trying to up the ante. With Martin's dismissal leaving Burley on 125-4 with just 12 overs to go, Alec Moorman met Hudson in the middle, Hudson going well on 61. The pair added an unbroken partnership of 84 to take Burley to 209-4 off their 40 overs - Moorman unbeaten on 38 and Hudson having completed his first century of the season to finish on 104. In truth it was a slightly below-par score at Burley and despite only taking 4 wickets BSSA would have been happy to keep the runs down to what they did.
After tea, Jim Burry found the early breakthrough in the 2nd over. Burley kept the runs down but struggled to add to the early wicket, despite Carl Foster's impressive spell of 8 overs for 25. It took the introduction of Jonny Blundell in the 17th over to find the breakthrough and end a stubborn 2nd-wicket partnership. He followed that up with a wicket in his next over to leave BSSA on 70-3 after 19 overs. This brought dangerman Nick Grant to the crease to join Trenchard who was in good touch at the other end. The pair seemed to be taking the game away from Burley, the powerful Grant being the key wicket Burley needed. Then came the 31st over, and what looked to be the deciding point of the match - Dan Maher was the bowler - Grant looked to have holed out to long-off and give Burley the initiative, however, Alex Martin spilled the chance. Then came controversy with the next ball, Maher had Grant caught behind - however Grant, knowing there wasn't a lot of batting to come after him, stood his ground - and despite admitting he had knicked behind off the tape on the bottom of his bat Burley had to accept the decision and with BSSA up with the rate defeat looked on the cards. The returning Blundell bowled Trenchard for 69 but with 4 overs to go BSSA needed just 16 runs with 6 wickets remaining. 8 off the next over meant it was 8 needed off 3 overs. Jim Burry then managed to bowl a wicket-maiden in the 38th. The first ball of the 39th over Grant tried to ease the pressure by going big but mis-timed straight to Alec Moorman for 83 to give Burley a sniff of an unlikely victory. Blundell then picked up his 5th wicket and more importantly conceded just 2 runs off the penultimate over and suddenly BSSA were left requiring 6 for victory off the last over. Jim Burry hit the stumps first ball, before conceding a single off the second. Dot, dot, dot and the scenario had become 4 runs needed from the last ball. Burry kept his nerve, Spendley hitting to Dan Maher at deep mid-on, Maher running out Goodridge at the non-strikers with the batsmen desperately coming back for a second run. And so Burley had done it! Justice had been done and Burley had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Blundell (5-32) and Burry (3-23) had bowled Burley to victory, backed up well by Reynolds and Foster. Burley had won by just 2 runs and with this week eclipsing the previous week and going to the final ball its been an exciting start to the Sunday season. Long may it continue!
