Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI v Verwood II on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 13:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 122 runs

Match report Burley Saturday XI returned to the School Green to take on the form side of the division - Verwood II. Having lost their opening game of the season to Dorset Indians, Verwood had won nine on the bounce. Daniel Tucker won the toss and elected to bat. Burley got off to a faltering start - losing both openers inside the first 8 overs. Pete Stacey played on to Benson O'Sullivan - who would go on to bowl an impressive 8-5-7-1. In-form Alex Martin was then bowled for 19. Ray Gunn and Dan Maher went about rebuilding the innings in a steady manner - the pair still together at the half-way stage on 51-2. Gunner (15) was run out in the 26th over to end their partnership of 55 and leave Burley on 77-3 off 26. With Burley in need of accelerating the innings, Maher (45) and Jonny Blundell (16) both lost their wickets by unfortunately playing on to their stumps. James Roberts, coming in at number 7, was the saviour of the Burley innings - hitting his first ever fifty, after finding an ally in Scott Menary. Roberts hit hard, and the pair ran well, with Roberts farming the strike as the pair put on 53 in the final 7 overs before Roberts was caught off the last ball - finishing on 52. Menary was 9 not out and Burley had crept up to a respectable 171-8.
Verwood got off to a decent start in their chase - with 27 on the board after 7 overs. Blundell then made the breakthrough, Jordan (13) being caught by Tucker at mid-wicket, before Blundell bowled the new batsman in the same over. Suddenly Burley had their tails up, and the Verwood top-order had no answers to Blundell and Dan Mepham - the pair bowled beautifully - Blundell in particular and took regular wickets to leave Verwood reeling on 36-7 after both bowlers had finished their spells of eight. Blundell had superb figures of 8-4-9-5 to claim his first 5-fer for the 2nd XI, backed up by Mepham with 2-21 off his 8. Jim Burry (2-8) picked up a couple of wickets before the game was concluded in the 23rd over when Mark Wheeler bowled Black to complete his 4th over - conceding just one run - and to dismiss Verwood for just 49.
Burley completed an impressive victory by 122 runs, picking up 22 points for their efforts, and will this week take on another form side of the league when they host New Milton IV - a side who have won their last four outings.
