Lyndhurst & Ashurst II v Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 13:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 36 runs

Match report Burley 2nd XI rounded off the season with a hard fought victory over Lyndhurst & Ashurst II. Skipper Daniel Tucker lost the toss, the opposition captain asking Burley to bat first.

Burley lost their first wicket in the second over due to a poor umpiring decision. Alex Martin controversially given out LBW for (4) Stuart Pateman joined Pete Stacey at the crease and the pair steadily built the foundations for the innings. When Pateman was dismissed for (35) the pair had put on 102 for the second wicket. Stacey continued his fine innings, regularly finding the boundary whilst being well supported by Dan Maher (24) Pete was eventually bowled in the 30th over for (79) after a faultless innings striking 14 x 4's. With Burley well positioned at 147-3 with 10 overs to go, the innings slightly fell away with the middle order losing regular wickets trying to push the score up to 200. The innings finally closing on 180-8 off the allocated 40 overs. Andrew Petley the pick of the Lyndhurst bowlers finishing with 6-1-13-3.

With Lyndhurst bolstering their batting line up with two regular first team batsmen, Burley knew early wickets were crucial. Jonny Blundell dismissed opener Simon Park for (9) in the fourth over. Burley took their second wicket when James Roberts was introduced into the attack, bowling fellow opener Phil Morris for (15) Controversially Roberts was then removed from the bowling attack by the opposition umpire for bowling two (over waist high) no balls. Skipper Tucker turned to Dan Maher to replace Roberts, with Maher instantly making an impact picking up a wicket in his first over. At drinks Lyndhurst looked favourites at 95-3 off 20 overs, with dangerous batsmen Michael Comport well set. Burry & Maher picked up a couple of quick wickets after drinks and when Comport was dismissed for (66) by an excellent catch from Alex Martin the writing was on the wall. Scott Menary and Jonny Blundell returned to the attack to pick up the final wickets dismissing Lyndhurst for 144 in the 36th over. Maher picked up his first 5 wicket haul in an excellent spell of 8-1-49-5, well supported by Blundell 7.2-4-10-2 and Burry 8-0-27-1.

Burley 2nd XI finishing the season in fine form winning 7 of their last 9 games after going winless for the first 5 games of the season. Burley's outstanding second half of the season leading to a very respectable 7th place finish in the league. A great effort from all the team building on last years promotion! Roll on May 2019!
