Winton II v Burley Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report The batting efforts of Kieron Hudson and James Brown ended in vain as Burley succumbed to their third league defeat of the season to Winton, following losses to Bournemouth and Hythe & Dibden in previous weeks. The track was deceptive - on inspection and pre-game knowledge seemed to suggest that it would favour the fielding team and would significantly deteriorate throughout the day. With the outfield very slow as well Burley elected to bat first with a view that 170+ would be highly competitive. Having lost Alan Wright in the 9th over with the score on just 15, Hudson was joined by Brown at the crease. The pair started patiently but looked to increase the run rate as the partnership developed. Wright's wicket was to be the only one that Winton took and as Hudson brought up his half century with a 4 off of Gunaratne it also saw the pair reach the hundred partnership. Brown, soon after reached his fifty as both batsmen looked to milk the bowling for singles as well as take the opportunities to put the bad ball away to the boundary. With 5 overs remaining the total had reached 170 and thoughts turned to ensuring that the total reached 200. It ended at 220 with Brown bringing up his century with a single off of the last ball of the innings with Hudson at the other end 97 not out. The partnership ending unbeaten on 205.
As difficult as Winton found taking wickets so did the Burley attack. Despite early promise in spells from Brown and Tilly Callaghan, on her return to the club, the early wicket would not come. Gunaratne and Clark put on 128 for the first wicket with Winton well on course to match the Burley innings. Steven Moorman was the man to make the breakthrough having Clark caught by Craig Doick at midwicket. It was Moorman again to strike with Gunaratne caught in the deep by Kieron Hudson but with a required run rate of only 4 an over there was little pressure on the Winton batsmen to make mistakes. Moorman picked up another wicket and finished as the only wicket taker in the Burley team, finishing with 3-55, but Winton cruised passed the total with over 4 overs to spare.
Burley picked up 9 points from the defeat with Winton claiming 20.
