Ellingham v Burley Cricket Club U15 on Tue 10 Jul 2018 at 18:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 25 runs
Match report
Burley did the double over Ellingham in a good natured derby featuring many school friends on both sides at Picket’s Post.
Burley won the home game back in May and got off to a flier as openers Piers Scott (35) and Tom Hoole (38) both confidently retired.
Ellingham kept plugging away and with good bowling from Ronan Cosgrove (2-17) and Matt Stapleton managed to run through Burley’s middle order. Josh Stoodley took an incredible catch at fine leg to remove Lawrence Taylor and Burley slumped from 108-0 to 125-3.
With the game in danger of slipping away, Aaron Piper (38no) produced his best batting performance for Burley. Aided by Jonny Wakefield (12no), Piper reached the retirement rate with a four off the game’s final ball.
A total of 178 looked a tall order but Ellingham opener Conor Cosgrove never looked in danger of losing his wicket and hit six boundaries across a lightning outfield on the way to retiring on 36.
Wakefield removed Merlin Cork but at the half-way stage, Ellingham were just seven runs short of Burley’s total, only to lose the dangerous Ronan Cosgrove (10) to a catch at mid-off by Burley’s captain Scott Menary off Piper’s bowling.
Ellingham rallied and pushed the run-rate back up until Stoodley (17) was caught by Burley wicket keeper Jack Hughes. Brothers George and Joe Parris (23no) kept the game alive but tight bowling from Hoole and Danny de Wet closed the game out in Burley’s favour.
