Ferndown Wayfarers v Burley Cricket Club U10 on Fri 20 Jul 2018 at 6.15pm
Burley Cricket Club Won by 34 runs
Match report
Burley’s U10s produced their best performance of the season to clinch a first trophy for the club’s revived colts’ section.
The New Forest side got off to a flier as the team’s two youngest players, Thibaut Herve (8) and Jack Webb (9no), put pressure on Ferndown with some clever shots and quickfire running on every chance.
On a slow dry outfield at the Hamworthy Club, boundaries proved hard to come by for both teams. Burley’s captain Lily Crowley (17no), who was voted player of the final, struck the first and with Joe Clarke kept the runs flowing.
The run rate began to sag until Kai Hale (16no) and Stan Arnold (9) came to the crease. With Hale finding the boundary and Arnold regularly testing the Ferndown cordon, Burley produced a defendable total.
Ferndown’s big hitting openers Erin Rolfe (10) and Charlotte (8) quickly put Burley on the back foot, but an early stumping was the first sign of a massively improved performance in the field.
Early season defeats were often down to slack fielding, but Burley stepped up a gear in the final. Josh Lelliot took an excellent catch a mid-off and Jack Webb also held onto a difficult ball to dent the Dorset side’s strong start.
Those catches and three balls straight onto the middle stump took Oscar Wilkes to a memorable five-wicket haul that left Ferndown’s middle order in tatters. Jamie Speirs produced a tight line, and the run rate began to drift out of Ferndown’s reach.
With wickets tumbling, Alice Weir (9) was left batting alone with a runner and bravely held out until a second direct hit of the night from Kai Hale ended Ferndown’s resistance.
Burley were home with two overs to spare on a memorable night for a team that took a dozen matches before registering a win after starting in 2016 but ended this season on a high.
