Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI v Christchurch on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Burley 2nd XI suffered a four-wicket defeat in a low-scoring game at The School Green. With both skippers keen to bowl first, unfortunately it was Christchurch skipper Gavin Darwin who won the toss and elected to bowl. After losing Pete Stacey early, Jonny Blundell (15) and Pete Woodward (11) steadily rebuilt, getting to 30-1 before Blundell was caught. Woodward and Dan Maher quickly followed, and Burley were in real trouble at 32-4. James Bockett fell soon after with the score on 47, to bring Dan Tucker to the crease to join Ray Gunn. Burley were going nowhere fast, and at 71-8 with 10 overs to go, Tucker and Mark Wheeler did manage to get Burley up towards three figures, before Wheeler was bowled with the score on 95. Number 11 Nick Osborne stayed with Tucker to bring up the 100, and the innings came to an end in the final over when Tucker nicked behind, Burley finishing 107 all out, Tucker finishing on 28.
In reply, Burley had to bowl well and take early wickets. Dan Mepham and Blundell bowled their spells straight through, Mepham conceding only 13 from his 8 overs, and Blundell picking up two wickets as Christchurch were on 38-2. Two wickets for Wheeler, and one for Maher left Christchurch on 69-5 and Burley still in with a chance. However, a partnership of 33 between Gavin Darwin and Dan Squire ensured Christchurch would come out on top. Scott Menary picked up the wicket of Darwin, but Squire hit the winning runs in the next over to finish unbeaten on 18, as Christchurch won it 6 wickets down in the 35th over.
A strong Christchurch bowling attack used the new ball well, and ultimately won Christchurch the game, and if Burley had batted a bit better and put a few more runs on the board, it could have been a different outcome - but a good effort from Burley with the ball, and in the field, to try and defend a low score. Next up for Burley 2nd XI is a short away trip to Carvers sports ground, to face Ringwood.
