Burley Cricket Club Sunday XI v Hospital Services on Sun 30 Aug 2020 at 14:00
Burley Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs
Match report
With a number of senior players unavailable the Sunday XI fielded three U12 colts as they took on Hospital Services on the School Green. The game was a first taste of senior cricket for Stan Arnold, Oscar Wilkes and Joshua Lelliott-Porter and the boys did not disappoint, in attitude or performance. Stan was joined in the team by dad, Mick, and all four debutants had impact with the ball picking up 5 of the 8 Hospital Services wickets to fall between them.
Following the recent deluge of rain the wicket was soft and timing the ball off of the bat was difficult for both sets of batsmen and the outfield somewhat slower than the usual lightening School Green. Sam Tresman took the first Services wicket with Thakker getting a bat toe to a shorter ball that never really bounced and then seeing the ball trickle onto leg stump and just managing to dislodge one bail. Charlie Clamp, bowling at the other end, kept things tight early on and picked up two wickets and Services score after 10 overs stood at 48-3. Then came a stand of 101 between Andy Pope and Jamie Broady. Enter the debutants.... Oscar Wilkes picked up the wicket of Broady, LBW one short of his half century and Stan Arnold had Romtohal caught by Charlie Clamp two overs later. With the colts struggling a little to find their length (being asked to bowl on a 22 yard track as opposed to their usual U12 18 yard track) runs were sometimes hard to contain, especially with Pope at the wicket. However, with Pope in the 90's Mick Arnold picked up his first wicket for the club, Pope gone, caught by Clamp for 94. Three tidy overs for Joshua Lelliott-Porter also saw him bag 2-8 and Hospital Services finished with 215-8
Burley openers Kieron Hudson and Pete Stacey found the going tough and some accurate bowling from Services openers Wheble and Richardson meant runs early on were hard to come by. After drinks at 18 overs the pair looked to increase the run rate. The risk/reward scenario saw Stacey lose his wicket for 32 and Burley requiring 12 an over off of the last 10. Hudson and new partner Clamp continued to look for the required runs but had left themselves just too much to do and with boundaries protected by 7 fielders for the last 7 over the pair were destined to always fall short. Hudson went through to complete his century, unbeaten at the end on 108 with Clamp 36 not out in a stand of 98, Burley falling 32 short but the day belonged to the three colts whose smiles, commitment in the field, encouragement of all (especially each other) and sheer delight at taking wickets (despite their lack of sleep the night before) bodes well for the future of the club.
