Burley Cricket Club U15 v Swanage on Tue 09 May 2017 at 18:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 3 runs
Match report
Burley clung on for a memorable last ball win over Swanage in their opening East Dorset League fixture.
Solid contributions from Ollie Fitch (15) and Sam Howson (9) followed a fine innings from Piers Scott (35 not out) to take the New Forest to their highest total to date and Burley were close to batting out their innings until Nathan Howson was caught out with a brave attempt to find extra runs at the death.
In response, Jack Hughes produced an incredible start for Burley by claiming the wickets of openers Jude Morris and Sam Hayes in the first over.
Swanage quickly rallied and confident strokes from big-hitting Ryan Lander saw the Purbeck side stroll to 35-2 after three overs.
The home side were on the back foot but a breakthrough came after Hughes held onto a difficult catch off Sam Howson’s bowling to send Harry Long (15) back to the pavilion before Burley’s most economical bowler Scott Menary skittled out Lander for 31.
Suddenly, Burley had sight of an unlikely win. Danny de Wet and Nathan Howson kept up the pressure and the late introduction of Toby Fowler produced the crucial breakthrough as his accurate bowling bamboozled Lily Wood and Alastair McGregor.
The Purbeck side’s hopes of victory were dented further as a fine throw from deep by Jonathan Wakefield saw Nathan Pope run out.
Swanage's last two batters went into the last over needing a run a ball to win, but Burley hung on for victory in a game played in great spirit by both sides.
