Suttoners II v Burley Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 13:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Burley 2nd XI made it three wins on the bounce and five out of their last six in a hard-fought encounter away at Suttoners II. Skipper, Daniel Tucker won the toss and stuck Suttoners in to bat and watched Jonny Blundell and Dan Mepham keep Suttoners under pressure from the off. Suttoners found runs hard to come by and found themselves in trouble at 18-2 off 12 overs with a wicket apiece for Mepham and James Roberts. Roberts accounted for the middle order, in a spell of 8 overs straight through, in which he went for runs but importantly bowled wicket-taking balls - claiming 4-50 off his 8. Suttoners were on 97-6 off 25 when Roberts had finished his spell, with Alex Martin at the other end bowling Suttoners key opening batsman Nick Dennett (34). Blundell returned to get it on the act with a couple of wickets and with a wicket for Scott Menary Suttoners were 9 down with 102 on the board. The last wicket-partnership frustrated Burley for 7 overs as they squeezed out 22 more runs before Menary ran out last man Derek Hopkins to end the innings for 124.
In reply, Alex Martin got Burley off to a good start but was caught and bowled by Tom Lanham in the 5th over for 17. Lanham then took the wicket of Blundell in his next over and Burley were 24-2 and facing a tricky run-chase. Dan Maher joined Pete Stacey and the pair dug in, seeing off the dangerous Lanham (8-3-16-2), as well as keeping the runs ticking. Stacey and Ray Gunn then fell and much was depending on Maher as Burley were on 73-4. Martin Rapson (13) put on 29 for the 5th wicket with Maher to edge Burley closer to victory but the fall of Rapson, and then Dilly the very next ball meant Burley were 6 down and still needing 23. Maher, having played so well had passed his half-century, was joined by Roberts. Roberts took advantage of being dropped on one, took Burley to just 2 runs of their target before he was caught for a crucial 20. Maher then hit the winnings runs with his 9th boundary to finish his match-winning knock on an unbeaten 57 and see Burley over the line in the 32nd over to claim a three-wicket victory.
Burley 2nd XI move up to 7th place, taking 22 points from their victory, and return to The School Green this week to take on Bransgore II, who currently sit in 5th place in the league.
