Burley Cricket Club U19 v Poole Town on Thu 10 Jun 2021 at 18:00
Burley Cricket Club Won by 6 runs
Match report
Burley held on for an exciting win over Poole Town on the School Green in their opening game of the 2021 season.
Piers Scott and Charlie Clamp were untroubled as they put on 76 for the first wicket before the former was caught and the Dorset side's bowlers then succeeded in stemming the home team's run rate.
Ollie Fitch put on 16 but Dan Griffiths and Matty Williams both took successive wickets as Burley slumped from 122-1 off 13 overs to 127-5 a dozen balls later. The collapse was stemmed by Oliver James (13) who in his first game since primary school held on to take the New Forest side to 155-6.
The total might have looked daunting but Poole's openers Aryan Mehta and Manav Kathpalia were on the run rate from the first ball and put on 52 in the first seven overs. The breakthrough came from 15 year-old Taylor Boyle, who marked his Burley debut by skittling out Mehta.
Kathpalia and James Vice rallied the visitors before another of the host's younger players, 16-year-old Lawrence Taylor, removed Kathpahlia.
Tight bowling from Tom Hoole and brave fielding from Charlie Humphreys restricted Poole, but the visitors kept on chipping at Burley’s total away as the gloom descended over the Green.
In a rare foray from behind the stumps, Burley’s regular wicketkeeper Ollie Fitch (2-14) removed Vice and Dan Griffiths but Alex Moor proved harder to unseat.
With two overs left Poole needed only 13 runs but Burley's opener Dan Carter (0-20) returned for a final parsimonious fourth over that gave the visitors little opportunity to add to their total and Burley held on for a hard-fought win against sporting opposition.
