Match report
2021 Stone Cup Final
Burley retained the Stone Cup in a repeat of the final from 2 years ago. Winning the toss Sway decided to bat first but found the going tough, accurate bowling and good fielding meant that runs were hard to come by. Despite the rain that had fallen during the week the Burley outfield was still quick but a strong fielding ring ensured that boundaries were restricted throughout the Sway innings and a total of 110 seemed a long way short in 18 overs. Will Millard's 41 was the mainstay of the Sway innings with late cameos from Will Baughan (15n.o.) and Dave Marshall pushing the total into 3 figures. Jim Burry was the pick of the Burley bowlers only conceding 8 runs from his 4 overs and picking up 2 wickets in the process. This effort was ably supported by James Roberts (3-21) and Dan Mepham (2-27). In return Sway excerpted equal pressure on the Burley top order. Burley's run to the final had relied on runs from Alex Martin and Kieron Hudson primarily, but when both found themselves following Pete Stacey back to the pavilion, the reigning champions found themselves 13-3 after 5 overs and facing possible defeat. Much like the first innings Burley's runs relied on the bat of one person with a cameo innings to help overcome the Sway total. Skipper and man of the match Alec Moorman struck 8 fours and 2 sixes as he finished unbeaten on 59* supported to the near end by 2 fours and 2 sixes in a quickfire 21 from James Roberts. Needing just 3 from the final over it was fitting that Moorman struck a sweet 4 to the square leg boundary with 3 balls to spare and ensure that the Stone Cup remains in Burley for another year.
