Match report Burley's Sunday XI got the 2022 season underway with a defeat away to regular opponents Hospital Services at a sunny Doug Baker Memorial ground.
Losing the toss, Burley were sent into bat and Alex Martin and top scored before falling to some sharp bowling from Dan Murray. Late flourishes from Jim Burry and James Roberts bolstered the Burley score but when the latter fell to a superb catch from the hosts wicketkeeper Burley crumbled and the innings closed with four overs left and a score of 142.
Tarun Zemuri - Burley Sunday XI's top wicket taker in 2021 - removed opener Lasantha Wijesinghe and a good performance made the game tighter than Burley's innings warranted, Rhys Gadsby put in a sterling performance including a peach of a ball to remove A Robson. With Rishi Katakam holding onto two good catches, Gadsby returned figures of 4-27.
Tight bowling from Jim Burry, Steve Abraham and James Bockett restricted the hosts but Burley's total always looked 20-30 runs short. Despite having to resort to a runner, Tristan Richardson capped good a fine all-round performance to ease the hosts home.
